I think the idea is that the taken king/legendary edition includes all the games + the first two dlcs. storywise you can get through the entire game in like a week or two, so it makes sense just to buy the whole thing at once.

(edit: actually, i've never played it without so im not sure what is restricted without it. maybe just really reduced content?)
