Yes if on his 2020 return he files and is not listed on anyone else as a dependent, he will get the stimulus when he does. But you just have to balance that with how the deduction from claiming him and any other benefits (keeping on health care, taking educational credits and a few others weigh in) The same for people that had a child born in 2020 when they file a tax return in 2021 they can get the $500.
